Welcome to Class

Our symphony filed trip is finally (almost) here!  This Thursday, May 17, your child will take a trip to see (and hear) the Jacksonville Symphony.  It is a nice trip that allows us to dress a little fancier than a regular field trip, so sorry, no field trip shirts this time.  We will leave school around 10:45 a.m. and return at around 1:00 p.m.  We will not eat lunch until we return to school so please be sure your child eats a good breakfast, and you may want to send in a mid-morning snack for your child to eat before we leave.  Parents are permitted to go (for free) but due to limited parking must ride the bus.  Please let me know if you plan on joining us.

Reading Levels Explained

The reading standard/expectation is that third graders begin the year on an independent level 'K.'  This means that students should be able to read level 'K' text with 95% or better accuracy, fluency rating of 110 words per minute or more with expression and comprehension.  In third grade the end of the year expectation is a level 'N.'  This year your child's reading growth will be less about how far he/she goes and more on how deep he/she goes.  Your child will be required to complete written retellings, interpretations (message/moral/theme), and reflections (favorite part and why).  Watch for more info...coming soon!

Bucket Filling

"The idea of Bucket Fillers is based on the book Have you Filled A Bucket Today? (A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids) by Carol McCloud.  The premise of the book is this...

We all carry an invisible bucket that contains our feelings.  When our bucket is full, we feel great.  When our bucket is empty, we feel sad.  A bucket filler is someone who says or does nice things for other people.  By doing this, they are filling other people's buckets and filling their own bucket at the same time" (Powell, 2010, p. 1).
