:Week 24: This week we will continue to work with fractions. Our focus will be on fractions that are greater than one (improper fractions and mixed numbers) and comparing fractions. Last week your child brought home his/her set of fraction bars; they will be very helpful when it comes to comparing fractions! Since it is a short week we will be reviewing the multiplication facts 0-7 before moving on to the 8’s next week.
:Week 23: We began our fraction unit late last week. We looked at dividing shapes into equal parts. This week we will dig into how we can write a fraction to name a part of a whole (terms: numerator and denominator), how we can write a fraction to name part of a set, and how we can find a fractional part of a set. Your child will also be bringing home his/her set of fraction bars. Please keep them in a safe place-we will need them very soon!
Week 22: We are just about ready to start fractions. This is a very important unit that we are moving into. A lot of information will be covered. This will be a large component of the math portion of the FCAT. Please make sure homework is being completed every night for reinforcement. Also, we will have our 6’s multiplication test on Friday. Practicing with repetition will help with learning multiplication facts.
:Week 21: We are ready to start a new unit in math. We will start by learning about different units of measurements, estimating measurements, and how to correctly measure an object. From there, we will use our measuring skills to find the perimeter of an object. This week we will also have our timed multiplication test on the 5's. Make sure to study!
Week 20: This week we will continue learning about congruency and symmetry. This is a short unit, but it is filled with lots of important vocabulary words and concepts!
Week 19: This week we will wrap up our current math topic on 2D shapes with an assessment. Our next topic will build on what we know about 2D shapes as we learn about congruency and symmetry. Due to the short week, we will not have a new set of multiplication facts to learn; instead the students will review of the 2’s & 3’s with a mixed quiz.
*****Additional copies of the math vocabulary sheets for Geometry and Measurement are now available below and in our Virtual Book Bag!
Lines & Line Segments Angles Polygons
Week 18: This week we will continue learning in our geometry unit. We will focus on triangles, quadrilaterals, and how we can combine and separate shapes to make new shapes, forms, and figures. We are also going to continue timed multiplication quizzes this week. On Friday, we will have our timed multiplication tests on 3's. Please make sure you are studying every night! If you have computer and internet access let me highly encourage you to utilize the Math Magician website. It is so fun and you can even print out awards. Click HERE to see my award :)
Week 17: This week we will begin learning about geometry and measurement. This is a large unit with TONS of vocabulary words! Please be on the look out for a study sheet that will come home with your child in the next week or so. We are also going to begin timed multiplication quizzes this week. On Friday, we will have our timed multiplication tests on 2's. Please make sure you are studying every night!
Week 16: We have learned so much about multiplication and division over the past several weeks! This week we will wrap up our multiplication and division unit with a division test and a unit test. We will continue to work with multiplication with the memorization of the basic facts. Again, I would like to encourage you to make or buy flashcards for your child to use and don’t forget about the multiplication games available online.
Week 15: This week we will dig into division. One of the lessons will include knowing when to multiply and when to divide when we read a story problem. We will also begin learning those multiplication facts. Let me encourage you to make or purchase a set of flash cards so that your child can begin working on his/her automaticity at home. Also, don't forget to utilize the Math Magician website-because it will definitely be more fun than flash cards!!!
Week 14: This week we will continue working with multiplication and then move into division, which we have already gotten a head start on with our missing factor multiplication. Since we have been working on the meaning of multiplication now is a great time to start practicing the multiplication facts. This week we will begin with the zeros. The Zero Property of Multiplication will help us to remember that when ANY number is multiplied by zero the product is zero.
Week 13: This week we will continue working with arrays. We have learned that an array is a set that shows equal groups in rows and columns. After the array is built/recorded the students have also learned that we can write a multiplication equation/sentence to match. It is always written as the number of rows times the number of columns to get the product.
****Coming soon: after the Thanksgiving break we will begin memorizing the multiplication facts. It is important that your child is able to accurately and quickly answer these problems. We will focus on one group at a time starting with the zeros.
Week 12: This week we will continue working with multiplication. Our focus will be on the multiplication facts that the students will begin learning (and memorizing-soon). This week the students will use the 100s chart to see the multiples and create their own book. It will be a pretty big project, but I am anxious to see how it will help with the memorization of the multiplication facts.
Week 11: This week we will continue working with multiplication and division story problems. The students have learned about several strategies that can be used to solve these problems. Some of the strategies include pictures, counting on our fingers, skip counting (identifying multiples) and repeated addition. It is critical that until your child has all of the multiplication facts (algorithms) memorized that he/she has another way to solve these problems.
Week 10: This week we will wrap up rounding and estimating before moving into a new topic in math. Our next topic will include learning about the meanings of multiplication and division. We are going to take time to understand the concept of multiplication first. We will learn what it means, and figure out ways to use it. Memorizing the facts (e.g. 2 x 0=0, 2 x 1 =2, 2 x 2=4, etc . . .) will come a little later.
Week 9: This week we will be estimating sums and differences. Don't forget about our newest free resource that is available to you and your child at home through www.pearsonsuccessnet.com. Your child's username is his/her first and last name without any spaces and the password is password.
Week 8: This week we are moving on to rounding and estimating. There is a cute little "fairy tale" that I found on one of the many blogs that I follow that I hope will be helpful. Please click here if you would like to print your own copy of the rounding fairy tale.
Week 7: This week our focus will be on subtraction. I found a cute rhyme that was a huge success on Friday with reminding the students to regroup. The rhyme is:
Numbers the same? Zero's the game. More on top? No need to stop! More on the floor? Go next door.
This week we will move into larger and larger problems going all the way up to 6-digit subtraction! Again, it is VERY important that each student is EXTREMELY careful while working out each equation.
Week 6: Last week our focus was on addition. We worked with adding very large numbers (up to 6-digits), which sometimes involved regrouping. We also worked with addition problems that had multiple addends. We will spend the beginning of this week continuing to add these large problems before assessing and then moving on to subtraction. It is critical that each student is VERY careful when working!!!
Week 5: Last week we wrapped up our official place value unit. This week we will begin our addition and subtraction unit as we continue to work with numbers up to the one hundred thousands. Many of the addition problems will require regrouping when determining the sums. Some of the vocabulary words that your child will encounter in this unit include:
- addends-numbers added together to get a sum
- sum-the answer to an addition problem
- regroup-to name a whole number in a different way (formally known as carrying in addition)
- Associative Property of Addition-the grouping of addends can be changed and the sum will be the same
Week 4: We have really dove in deep into place value. This week will be wrapping up Unit 1 and the students will take a cumulative assessment that will include all of the things we have worked on during this unit. Your child will be expected to use his./her knowledge of place value (up to the one hundred thousands place) to read and write numbers in standard, expanded, and word form, as well as compare numbers and order numbers. It has been a lot of information, but I believe that they are ready!
Week 3: Last week the students took an assessment to test their knowledge of standard, expanded, and word forms of 5 and 6-digit numbers. You can see your child's score online (if you have the grade portal username and password.) This week the students will take their first (of three) district provided benchmark tests. The results of these tests are used as baseline information and can be extremely helpful when planning out the rest of the year (curriculum wise). We will also work on comparing numbers.
Week 2: Last week the students were assessed on their knowledge of standard, expanded, and word form of 3- and 4-digit numbers. Overall the class did very well. This week will go a little deeper into place value as we venture on into the one hundred thousands place! ***Also, be on the look out for a vocabulary sheet that will go home this week. This has several of the math terms that we have been working with in class.
Week 1: We have already been super busy in math! The students have taken a placement test to show me their areas of strength and weakness and we have begun exploring place value. We also worked with representing 3- and 4-digit numbers in standard form, expanded form, and word form.
