Week 24:  Black History projects are due THIS Friday, (2-24-12).  The kids will present their projects in front of the class.  I am excited to hear all that the students have learned about the person that they have chosen!

Week 23:  I hope that your child has already selected his/her person for his/her Black History project.  Be sure to follow the directions carefully!

Week 22:  Your child is bringing home the directions for completing his/her Black History Month project.  Please read through everything carefully and then do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions.  Projects are due 2/24/12.

Week 21:  Social Studies is still on break :)

Week 20:  We will take a break from Social Studies for a while so that we can focus on science.

Week 19: This week we will look at the colonies in America from1620-1780.  We will compare and contrast how the English and Spanish colonies were alike and different.

Week 18:  We will continue to learn about the explorers and the communities of long ago of North America.

Week 17:  We are finally ready to learn about those famous explorers of long ago.

Week 16: We will come back to Social Studies in January and learn about those famous explorers of long ago.

Week 15:  It will probably be either next week or the week after the break before we get into our unit on explorers.  Stay tuned . . .  :)

Week 14:  We are just about ready to start leaning about communities in history (probably next week).  We will start with learning about important explorers such as Christopher Columbus, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, Samuel de Champlain.

Week 13: This week we will continue to learn more about the culture of the Navajo and Cherokee people

Week 12: This week we will learn more about the culture of the Navajo and Cherokee people.  We will also learn about the ceremonies and traditions that they celebrated long ago and today.

Week 11: We will start a new chapter this week.  We are going to be learning about the Navajo and Cherokee Indians.  We will learn about the Navajo first and then next week learn about the Cherokee.

Week 10: This week we will take a short break from social studies so that we can continue working on our animal chapter in science.  Look for social studies to return next week!

Week 9: This week we will continue learning about Earth's land and water, our country's geography, and community resources.

Week 8: This week we will begin learning about Earth's land and water, our country's geography, and community resources.  We will continue to use our map skills that we learned last week to read additional types of maps such as climate and landform maps.

Week 7: This week we will continue working on map skills.  We have learned a saying that will help us to remember the four main directions on the compass rose.  The saying is "Never Eat Soggy Worms."  FYI-Maps are commonly found on reading assessments and used as a way to assess whether or not your child can apply knowledge learned from informational text features.  Therefore, this is another great reason why it is so important for your child to acquire this very valuable skill.

Week 6: Towards the end of this week we will jump back into Social Studies and begin working on map skills. This is a very important S.S. skill but can also be extremely beneficial when reading informational text and informational text features that appear even in fiction text.  This is a skill that according to our beginning of the year reading benchmark the students struggled with so I can't wait to begin to explore it!

Week 5: We are taking a short break from Social Studies so that we can devote the proper amount of time to everything that we are learning about in science.  Not to worry social studies will return shortly.

Week 4: This week we will wrap up our communities unit and the students will have an opportunity to show off all that they have learned.  We have read and charted information on all three of the communities.   Now the students will use what they know to create their own book as well as take a short quiz.

Week 3: Unfortunately because of time, we were unable to get to Social Studies last week.  Therefore, this week we will begin our Places We Live chapter with lessons on communities.  The three types of communities that we will focus on this week include Urban, Suburban, and Rural.  We will look at the similarities and differences among these communities as we compare and contrast their attributes.

Week 2: This week we will begin our Places We Live chapter with lessons on communities.  The three types of communities that we will focus on this week include Urban, Suburban, and Rural.  We will look at the similarities and differences among these communities as we compare and contrast their attributes.

Week 1: Due to the amount of time that we have allotted each day to get everything done Social Studies and Science we be on a rotating schedule.  This week we will begin with Science, therefore, there will be no Social Studies : )
